Fern Therapy employs an integrative and person-centred approach to counselling and psychotherapy, dependent on the client’s needs. Additionally, Fern Therapy works psychodynamically, examining unconscious processes to help facilitate a deeper understanding of one’s emotions and mental processes.
Fern Therapy works using art psychotherapy with children, adolescents and adults experiencing mental health difficulties, where the client is supported to explore and process areas causing distress in their lives through the medium of art. It is a method to access and process trauma at both conscious and unconscious levels. The images created are used as a means of communication between the client and therapist. This approach can also be less stressful for the client than verbal therapy.
Fern Therapy uses a range of psychological approaches, including Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, when working with clients who have experienced a traumatic event or events in their lives. Through the therapeutic process, Fern Therapy endeavours to help the client in coming to terms with the traumatic event, reducing fear and avoidance, improving coping skills, and building a sense of safety whilst validating the traumatic experience.
Fern Therapy works using a form of CBT called REBT or Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. This form of therapy helps the client in identifying beliefs and thought patterns that may lead to emotional or behavioural concerns, and to then develop new strategies to replace them that have a more positive affect emotionally and behaviourally.
Fern Therapy offers the NVR programme to parents or primary care-givers who are experiencing emotional and/or physical aggression from a child. This is a 10-week programme, and helps to reduce violence in the home, empowering the parent or primary care-giver, improving communication and supporting the child in the self-regulation of emotions.
Fern Therapy offers programming for schools in mental health and art therapy. For further information, please contact Aoife at info@ferntherapy.ie.
